The Apprentice X9 programme offers an exciting entry-level opportunity for individuals who are passionate about heavy machinery, mechanical systems, and hands-on technical work. This apprenticeship is designed to develop skilled artisans who can competently inspect, maintain, repair, and troubleshoot heavy earthmoving equipment used across construction, mining, and industrial sectors.
Working under the guidance of qualified technicians and experienced mentors, the apprentice will gain exposure to real machinery, workshop procedures, and customer service standards. This is a structured training opportunity that provides both theoretical learning and practical on-the-job experience. The ultimate goal is to equip the apprentice with the knowledge, skill, and confidence needed to eventually qualify as a fully competent heavy equipment technician.
Key Outputs and Responsibilities
As an Apprentice X9, you will assist senior technicians in a variety of technical and mechanical activities. The role involves both workshop-based tasks and fieldwork at customer sites. Over the duration of the apprenticeship, you will be trained to perform the following core duties:
1. Inspection of Heavy Earthmoving Equipment
One of your primary responsibilities will be to conduct thorough inspections of heavy earthmoving machinery. This includes checking the condition of engines, hydraulic systems, electrical components, braking mechanisms, frames, and attachments. Inspections must be performed according to company standards and manufacturer guidelines to ensure safety, reliability, and optimal performance of the equipment.
2. Basic Troubleshooting and Fault-Finding
You will learn how to identify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults using diagnostic tools, testing equipment, and technical manuals. Apprentices are expected to support senior technicians in determining the root cause of machine problems and recommending appropriate corrective action.
3. Performing Maintenance and Repairs
Routine maintenance tasks will form a large part of your training. These include servicing engines, replacing filters, checking fluid levels, greasing machine parts, and adjusting components to maintain correct specifications. You will also assist in minor and major repairs, depending on the level of complexity and your stage of training.
4. Component Removal and Installation
You will be responsible for assisting with the safe removal and installation of critical machine components such as starters, alternators, hydraulic pumps, valves, hoses, gearboxes, and engines. This work may take place within the workshop or on customer sites, depending on operational requirements.
5. Handling Parts Ordering and Inventory
As part of your on-the-job training, you will learn how to order replacement parts and maintain basic stock control. This includes identifying the correct parts, creating order requests, returning unused components, and ensuring accurate documentation of parts used during repairs.
6. Administrative Duties
A crucial part of the role involves managing your own administrative tasks. These duties may include completing service reports, recording labour hours, logging work performed, submitting expense claims, and ensuring all paperwork is accurate and up to date. Proper recordkeeping supports quality control and ensures compliance with company processes.
7. Preparing Customer Machine Analysis and Reports
You will assist in compiling detailed machine analysis documents, including Machine Inspection Reports (MIR). These reports provide customers with a clear understanding of the condition of their equipment, necessary repairs, and recommendations for preventative maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications and Entry Requirements
To be considered for the Apprentice X9 programme, candidates must meet the following educational and competency criteria:
Academic Requirements
- Grade 12 / N3 with Pure Mathematics, with a minimum pass mark of 45%
(Functional Mathematics does not qualify.) - Grade 12 with English, minimum 45%
- Grade 12 / N3 with Physical Science, minimum 45%
These subject requirements ensure the apprentice has the foundational numeracy, literacy, and scientific understanding necessary for technical training and diagnostics.
Technical Theory (Advantageous but not compulsory)
Applicants with additional N2 or N3 subjects in relevant technical areas will have an added advantage. Beneficial theory includes:
- Motor Mechanics or Diesel Mechanics theory
- Electrical or Electronic Engineering theory
These theoretical subjects strengthen your understanding of machines, systems, engines, and electrics, making it easier to grasp the practical aspects of the apprenticeship.
Additional Advantages
- Possession of the “Technicians for the World” certificate will be considered an added benefit.
- A Code B Learner’s License (light motor vehicle) will also be an advantage, as apprentices may be required to travel to different work locations, customer sites, and training centres.
